Smash cut- A smash cut is a technique in film and other moving picture media where one scene abruptly cuts to another for aesthetic, narrative, or emotional purpose. To this end, the smash cut usually occurs at a crucial moment in a scene where a cut would not be expected.

Representation of Ethnicity, Class. In footballer's wives the element of mine-en-scen was very much used to show their class. In the opening scene we already see how expensive their houses are, from the first impression we see the nice posh house and a fountain this shows high class but then the overly boastful cars already hint at two men who just try to show off their wealth as much as possible. The scene after that we see the first footballer, he has a very snobby appeal, gelled back hair and a silky shirt. It doesn't look professional it looks like a cocky managers outfit. His wife aswell is wearing a tight red dress showing off her figure and her cleavage, she also has no class and looks like she's about to go clubbing. This shows how the man looks for only the looks in a woman. The interior of the house is disgraceful, it looks as if they picked out expensive things without consideration and threw them all together. The amount of colors and materials doesn't work together and comes across as the least classy and absolutely disgusting. The second man's house is the same, it has an unbearable collection of colors which really really really don't show how rich he is. Perhaps instead of getting a designer to help him decorate he's too full of himself and thinks his opinion is the highest so decorates it himself. Which again doesn't show class. The clothes he wears shows how brag he is, his whole look is. He has a sideburn connecting to his beard and a huge diamond in his ear showing how he's a womanizer and looks like he tries to pick up girls. He later has an expensive watch and a ring with some most likely expensive shades. As he seems very confident in his opinion and doesn't seem to care about what's trendy or not we see how narcissistic he is and how low his class is.
In the opening scene of blackpool even at the beginning of it we see the rule of thirds being used to balance the clip, this shows how they're stable and how organised their life is most likely due to age. Then later in the video we see a cross cutting action showing the dad and the new boyfriend. This really builds suspense between the two and shows how angry the father is because of the age of the new boyfriend. So the effect of this is showing how the age of the boyfriend really baffles the father and makes him angry making him have these short outbursts at the man. The colour grading for when we see the parents is warm and bright to show how they're more experienced and warm in terms of age. When Steve came in the room went bit more cold to show off how even though he's the same age he's more of a failure.
How is mise-en-scene used to represent ability and disability in "Coming down the mountain"11/10/2017 In the short clip of Coming Down the Mountain" we see mise-en-scene used to represent ability and disability. In the first bird's eye view shot we see how different the two brothers are. The disabled brother had many bright colours in his side of the room and lots of toys showing how his mental state is one of a child, the other brothers room is dull with shades of grey, brown and black, his side looks very sophisticated and one more-less similar to a teenagers room. Throughout the whole scene we see the disabled brother wearing very colorful clothes with primary colours and the abled one wearing again mostly dull and dark colours. In the middle of the extract we see the two brothers walking to the bus station, at the bus station we see the two brothers on five different occasions in all five the disabled brother is playing with a new toy and moving around, these props show how the younger brother again can't just sit in one place and has to be doing something carrying across his characteristic of having a short memory spam. The older brother just sits there calmly. When on the bus station with the creepy man we see a clear line between the two brothers and the man, this line is part of the bus station wall but it really emphasizes the difference between the 3. Later we see again how on a holiday the disabled son has toys as props and an ice cream, most teens of their age usually don't play around with balls and kites. Again in the classroom we see the boy who starts yelling and mocking around dressed in bright colours which possibly shows how less mature most teens act.
In the small clip that we watched the use of sound has presented sexuality with several factors. In the first scene we hear no sound or music in the background showing how simple and masculine the men are, by the end of the scene though there is a sound bridge connecting it into the gay bar scene. The music used for this scene is upbeat and electronic, the effect of using it is showing how much more fun and almost colorful the LGBT community is. The sudden transition from no sound into these tunes shows us how the producers want to portray how the two types are very different. In the bathroom scene the music goes quite but not completely mute to show how he is now more excepting go the community. When the attacker smashes him into the wall we hear the attacker violently scuffing into his ear with the overlapping sound of the man breathing intensely, this is extremely disturbing to the viewer and shows how when the man started to relax and began to become okay with the LGBT community he gets attacked and dominated by the more masculine man. After the disturbing scene the music goes up again and we can barely make out the dialogue showing that he's too serious and that in the LGBT community they're a lot more easy going.
At the beginning of the scene we see a push in to Margaret's face, it represents her power and the building up of her anger. After that all the scenes of the men are positioned to show how all the people in the court are in the man's favor, most shots were low angle to show how the men looking up to the man. The close up of her hands show how she's fearful and angry of the situation, it shows her cold character and how she's not showing emotion through her face but through only through the non noticeable body language. When she's walking out of the court the tracking shot is very stable and shows her confidence and power. However when we see the men walking out go the court room the camera is shaky and shows their anxiety and how they are less confident then her. Also the use of close-ups is used mostly to show the femininity, the scene with the hand bag, the rig on her hand, the tracking shot of her feet in heels these are all used to show her femininity, they don't provide a deeper meaning to the scene so they area there purely for the purpose of building up her character. At the very end of the video when she first speaks and shouts at the men theres a zoom in on her face to show how all the attention goes to her and no one else making her have all the attention and completely dominate the scene.
1. What have you learnt by doing this exercise?
I think I've improved my storyboarding and shot list skills, also adapting the screenplay to be more achievable with our circumstances. I think our film was very good as we used a wide variety of shots. In terms of what could be improved I think we could've spent more time actually preparing everything we need instead of just deciding on the spot. Procrastinating wasn't the best choice when filming in a rush. 2. What skills have you developed? I've improved my storyboarding skills as before I didn't know which key moments to use. Also I think we've really improved with the shortlist making because we used to just chose whatever angle for the scenes but we've really thought about how each shot would've brought the motivation and storyline to the audience. During the production we've followed our shortlist thoroughly and when making any changes we developed our ideas for the best outcomes. Also I thought having one person direct it and film it other then acting as well really helped with the organisation of the progress. During the editing I had my first attempt at doing three cut scenes which turned out brilliantly. Something we've attempted to do is use a phone to record the audio of the scene and later edit it in over the original audio, didn't turn out aswell as we hoped it to but perhaps if we use a professional equipment piece next time it'll be a higher quality. 3. What feedback have you received? Overall it was good but there were a couple factors which could be improved. First of all some of the scenes chronological order didn't quite make sense and threw of the order of the screenplay. The other factor was that we didn't have enough footage for some characters and it made it not as clear as intended. One other mistake I made when filming is that when filming a shot the audio app could be seen on the phone so it was a bit of a fail. The story was pretty short and i think we could've developed it more to be more interesting and more realistic. 4. How would you improve your group work task? I would spend much more time adjusting the script to our possibilities and planning our shots more. It would really improve the quality of our film if we learned to use the 9 square technique and use proper equipment for the sound. During the editing we should've spent time to put everything into order following our shortlist and the actual screenplay. |
